Sustainability: Science, Practice, & Policy is being published as part of an ambitious government/private industry partnership between the NBII (National Biological Information Infrastructure, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI)) and CSA, a privately-owned information company. The purpose of this association is to develop a Biocomplexity Collection that examines the countless interactions of all living entities, especially humans, with the Earth and its environment.
The NBII is a broad, collaborative program that provides increased access to data and information on the nation's biological resources. The NBII links diverse, high-quality biological databases, information products, and analytical tools maintained by NBII partners and other contributors in government agencies, academic institutions, non-government organizations, and private industry. NBII partners and collaborators also work on new standards, tools, and technologies that make it easier to find, integrate, and apply biological resources information. Resource managers, scientists, educators, and the general public use the NBII to answer a wide range of questions related to the management, use, or conservation of this nation's biological resources.
In 2001, CSA joined the NBII program to develop a Biocomplexity Collection to further the NBII's mission. CSA has been publishing abstracts and indexes to scientific and technical research literature for over 30 years and has remained committed to aggressively broadening access to the latest thinking in the sciences and social sciences.
The Biocomplexity Collection is a rich assemblage of data and resources which is available for free through the NBII website.
The Collection includes:
- Biocomplexity Database: Bibliographic citations and Web resources from more than 20 databases covering major areas of biocomplexity. This includes the Human Population & Natural Resource Management database, which covers research related to issues of human population and the environment.
- Biocomplexity Thesaurus: A linguistic cross index service that greatly facilitates retrieval of relevant info requested by users.
- Towards Best Practices Database: A Web-based resource designed for those involved in studying and managing applications and information on sustainability practices.
- Sustainability Science Database (in development): Bibliographic citations and Web resources to supports all those involved in studying & managing the complex interactions between economic, social and environmental sustainability. Coverage includes relevant papers, reports, books and reviews from standard peer-reviewed scientific journals. To ensure comprehensive coverage, material from hard-to-find gray literature will also be summarized with an emphasis on full-text access.
